Collin and I met with adventure being the base of what brought us together out west. After taking our first family vacation to the Big Apple, I have come to find out that we are growing our family with each experience we take. As we have grown and continue to grow as new parents of a now 6 month old beautiful baby girl, here is what New York City looked like through my eyes.
Taking a Baby to the Big City
We took Olin on her first hike at 3 weeks old, so traveling and getting outdoors with a baby has never really scared or worried us to the point of locking her up inside away from the world until she's "old enough." We do it safely and we try our best to prepare ahead and even then, there are always going to be surprises along the way.
While exploring the city for the first time, I caught myself just staring at these two in pure amazement of how Collin and I went from being two kids solo-traveling around the country to one family of two parents and a baby boppin' around New York City. We were unsure of what to expect committing to this trip with a baby, so we did it as we have done most things since we met- without a set plan. If there is one thing I learned on this trip, it would be that parenting a child takes teamwork and so does being in a relationship in general. Collin and I both have strengths and weaknesses that helped us have an amazing experience navigating NYC on a low budget with no set plan. First off, Collin is without a doubt the patient one of the family. Night #1 in Times Square, I hurriedly packed the diaper bag and left out one particular element: the bottle formula. While scurrying down the street with an understandably fussy-hungry 6 month old, I begin whining about what a horrible mother I am for forgetting Olin's dinner 5+ subway stops away from the hotel. Collin calms me down, immediately comes up with a backup plan, and we hop into Walgreen's and pick up some banana baby food to tie her over. We learned a lot about ourselves as a family on this trip, and traveling is a wonderful way to get out of one's element and really grow together! We took turns between carrying Olin on the Baby Bjorn front carrier and hauling the Anicca diaper bag. Collin has back pain from a couple discs being ruptured, so we would switch off and I would carry Olin when his back was not feeling up to par and vice-versa. We took turns holding the baby when we ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Most importantly, we always worked together to keep Olin safe and warm. And we had a blast along the way! We saw more of NYC than I would have ever expected to see on Olin's and my first trip there! We took subways everywhere, walked our butts off, rode a ferry, ate some amazing street food, museum'd our little hearts out, and met some really friendly locals!
I cannot imagine traveling without these guys anymore. The only thing we lacked on this trip were the dogs, and surprisingly NYC has a lot of pup- citizens! We saw dogs everywhere we went, especially trotting around Central Park.
If you are second guessing a trip to the big city with a baby, just get in the car and go!
